Defender

I have a Defender. No one and Nothing can conquer me without going through my Defender first. There will be times when I am in pain. There will be times when friends and family have fled under the pressure and I am left with only the All-sufficient Defender. There will be times when I can’t see the end of my struggle. But Defender can. He can see where we are going. He knows where He is taking me. When I call on His name He is faithful to rescue me for, He cannot fail. His fatherly voice assures me.

When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. (Isaiah 43:2)

I wish I could explain the love He has for me; a love that cannot be merely described but needs to be known. King David knew my Defender. I can but echo his words about our Mighty Fortress in Psalm 18.

The pangs of death surrounded me,
And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
5 The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
6 In my distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried out to my God;
He heard my voice from His temple,
And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.
7 Then the earth shook and trembled;
The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken,
Because He was angry.
8 Smoke went up from His nostrils,
And devouring fire from His mouth;
Coals were kindled by it.
9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down
With darkness under His feet.
10 And He rode upon a cherub, and flew;
He flew upon the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness His secret place;
His canopy around Him was dark waters
And thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the brightness before Him,
His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire.
13 The Lord thundered from heaven,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe,
Lightnings in abundance, and He vanquished them.
 Then the channels of the sea were seen,
The foundations of the world were uncovered
At Your rebuke, O Lord,
At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.

As you can see, my Defender doesn’t play around. His love is fierce and his wrath is powerful. My Defender, my Shield, my Hero, my Champion, will not leave me alone. But He is not solely a Defender. He is my Father, my Friend, my Creator, my Lord, and  the Lover of my soul. He will not only vanquish the enemy, but He sets me in a place full of His Spirit, abounding in grace and love. He sets me in a place where I can thrive as He strengthens my hands for battle and teaches me about the paths before me.

He sent from above, He took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy,
From those who hated me,
For they were too strong for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
But the Lord was my support.
19 He also brought me out into a broad place;
He delivered me because He delighted in me.

I do not desire to fight any battles without my Wonderful Counselor, my Mighty God. There is unending hope for you and I in the Shadow of the Defender. Stop trying to fight the battle alone. It is not required of you. Let go, and let the Defender win the day.

The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still. (Exodus 14:14)
